Nixs Restaurant and Lounge Opening & Hiring for July 2014

Press Release

Nixs Hartford Is Opening Downtown in the Capital City
and Slated To Open End of July 2014.

Nixs Hartford will be open for business by the end of July on 40 Front Street in downtown Hartford. Paying tribute to the Boston Harbor Island, Nix’s Mate, Nixs is a sophisticated neighborhood lounge, bar and restaurant that will seat 180 guests with private dining space available.

Nixs is bringing something that is a welcome addition to downtown Hartford – NIGHTLIFE!

Nixs calendar will feature “Premier Saturdays,” live bands, special DJ events, and top local and national entertainment.

“Nixs is very much a lounge, with a lot of soft seating and room to move around. It’s a modern, high style space with clean lines, high tops, semi circle booths and an industrial feel. We’ll be bringing in top DJs to get Hartford on their feet. It’s the type of place where power suit jackets will come off and power heels will be kicked to the side after dark as the music comes on,” says Abner Kurtin, Managing Partner.

They're Hiring for their July Opening:
Nixs Hartford is hosting a hiring fair June 30th and July 1st from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm at the Spotlight Theatre, located at 39 Front Street in Hartford, right across from the restaurant. They will be hiring 40 employees including bartenders, servers, bottle service/cocktail servers, bussers, hosts, runners, shift supervisors, line cooks, expo prep and dishwashers.

Applicants who make it past the first round of interviews will participate in a special final audition downtown. The scavenger hunt will take place on July 2nd from 1:00 – 4:00 pm and will test the applicants’ ability to solve problems on the fly and get along with their future coworkers in a group setting - all while exploring downtown Hartford.

“We’re very excited for the fourth location of Nixs. Hartford is developing into the thriving city that we’ve all been hoping for,” explains Kurtin. “We’re right across from the Convention Center where the Front Street community is growing with increasing foot traffic each week. And now UConn is bringing students back to the city. We’re in a tremendous position for growth,” Kurtin says.

The Menu:

The bar and lounge offer New England microbrews, premium wines and hand-crafted cocktails that can be served by the half carafe or full carafe for sharing. House-made bottled cocktails will be a special feature at the bar – the Moscow Mistress is a favorite at Nixs.

Nixs Hartford will be offering a menu that complements the current neighboring establishments in the Front Street District – a fresh, unique raw bar and fun small plates perfect for sharing, with a focus on seasonally inspired fare.

“From the sea” tapas include tuna tartar tacos, fresh oysters and clams, mini fish & chips, lobster rolls, and tuna sashimi. Small plates “from the land” include BBQ Buffalo chicken dip, braised short rib tacos, Nixs chicken wings, and Margherita flatbread.

There are a variety of fresh salads and sandwiches that are perfect for lunch, including the tuna capraccio nicoise, crispy fish tacos and the Gallop cheeseburger. Entrees and large plates include the seafood tower, grilled hanger steak, roasted chicken, and swordfish.

Desserts are freshly made - such as Nixs’ famous Italian doughnuts, Zeppoles, and s’mores parfait.

The Floor Plan:

The floor plan will feature a private dining room and many options for semi-private parties - making Nixs well-suited and flexible for events and business functions for up to 250 people. The William Fly Room seats up to 10 guests for a more intimate event, with a TV in this room that has options to hook up a computer for presentations or an iPod for custom playlists. The lounge area comfortably entertains 20 – 40 people for a cocktail reception.

The modern industrial décor will feature mirrors, TVs, a wine wall, stone and the bar is a natural edge wood.

The Legend behind The Curse of William Fly

Nix's Mate is one of the smaller islands in the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. In 1726, upon his arrest, officials brought pirate captain William Fly to Boston, where he was executed. His body was then gibbetted on Nix's Mate to serve as a warning to sailors not to turn to piracy. Before his execution, Fly famously scolded the hangman for incorrectly securing the noose, then retied it himself. His body, with those of two other pirates, is buried on the island. Pleading not guilty to the end, one pirate predicted the Island would sink into the sea to prove his innocence. Since 1803, the island has disappeared each day in high tide.
