My Not So Secret Crush on Alex Rodriguez

There were about seven of us girls at a local restaurant to celebrate my birthday, when in walked Alex Rodriguez, otherwise known as A-Rod.

Yes, THE A-ROD!  The New York Yankees third baseman!

He came over to the table and said he heard it was my birthday and was it okay if he joined us.  He proceeded to explain that my friends had arranged this wonderful birthday surprise for me as they heard he was in town and they knew I was a big fan.

I was wide-eyed and tongue-tied but Alex was gracious, smiling, witty, and charming. It was my best birthday dinner EVER!
A really bad photoshop of my picture over his former wife's face.
Sad. I know.
But my sister-in-law thought it was real when she saw it on facebook.

And then I woke up.

Seriously.  I woke up. I was DREAMING!

Ever since Alex Rodriguez joined the Yankees I have been a big fan.  Much to my real-life husband’s chagrin, I refer to Alex as my “make-believe husband”.

And I have stuck with him through all the media hoopla. The Madonna kabbalah (who would have thought he’d go for the older ladies-and do I have a chance?) the Cameron Diaz popcorn time, and all the carrying on with the adorable Kate Hudson.

But if he leaves the Yankees I just might drop him like a hot potato.

Baseball fans are fickle like that you know!

    1. Thanks Donna. I hemmed and hawed over who to select for this topic ... but everyone who knows me, knows that Alex is my man!

  3. Ha! I love the last bit. If the guy isn't playing for my team anymore, he's suddenly a lot less hot. Funny how that happens.

    1. True! But he sure is dreamy, no matter where he plays!

  5. First jock I've seen today... Great choice! Personally, I thought Cameron Diaz looked exceptionally hot while they were an item.

    1. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would break up with Cameron Diaz!

It seems our athletes aren't good choices for role models or crushes anymore. But I simply had to choose him, we've been (un-)mutually exclusive for several years now. Key word, un as in uno!

  6. Professional athletes are hot. Unfortunately, many of them are assholes. But they're hot nonetheless.

    1. ...unfortunately you are probably right. But I think society in general is to blame for that. We excuse their "indiscretions" when we shouldn't. Forgive, yes, but excuse, no.

  7. Oh man, I thought this had really happened until you woke up. That would have been so cool!

    1. It was so real - it had me going at first, too! I agree that it's funny. My husband, now for some reason, he doesn't! Go figure!

  10. Isn't it so odd when celebrities populate our dreams? Some times I dream about people that I have no apparent interest during my waking hours. Who knew that crushing on athletes was the real Great American Pastime?

    1. Oh, Karen, VERY well said! Yes, it's certainly been MY Great American Pastime, that's for sure!

  11. That was hilarious. My hat goes off to your husband for being such a good sport! What is your opinion on the recent PED scandal?

    1. I really try to stay away from the scandal and focus on the game. But at a conference a few weeks ago that featured a sports panel of mostly former minor league players, it was glaringly apparent that they knew why some of their counterparts were being moved up to "the big dance" and they weren't. I applaud their decision to not succumb to pressure. To not "cheat".

These guys that chose instead to play clean are the real baseball heroes.

  12. Ha! that is awesome - i think that this would have been a great April Fool's post, because I honestly believed it, and thought - wow this lady must have some high roller friends - ha!!! :)

I prefer Derek Jeter (although the one time I saw him on the streets of NYC, I turned to my husband and said...OH MY GOSH....he looked and said - I know...my follow up - "where did that guy get an ice cream cone at 10:30 at night?!" My husband looked at me, and said that guy is Derek Jeter...My head whipped back to stare, and I got a wink...ah...literally, my one brush with my "other hubby"...and all I could think about was ice cream....
