Carlson's Landing in Essex Connecticut

Social Media Promotion: Portions Sponsored

New! In Essex Connecticut

If you're looking for scenic views, great food, and a gorgeous modern and airy setting, I've found the place for you!

Look no further than Carlson's Landing in Essex Connecticut! We were recently invited to experience Carlson's at a sample menu tasting courtesy of owner Robert Rabine, and executive chef Kyle Bledsoe.

Carlson's Landing Cocktail Menu

Owner Robert Rabine is the former owner / operator of Cafe Routier (Old Saybrook / Westbrook) and started fine-tuning  his Connecticut culinary heritage with stints at Robert Henry Restaurant (New Haven) and Cafe Lafayette (Madison). Connecticut shoreline locals will likely remember Robert's food and beverage column, the Oedipal Epicurean in the Shoreline Times (2011-2019).

Carlon's Landing's newly built structure overlooks the Connecticut River and the River Museum. The beautiful exterior gives way to a bright, open, and tastefully decorated interior.

The attention to detail is amazing, from the porthole arched door frame - to the mermaid door handle.

Outdoor seasonal decks are wrapped in Brazilian mahogany with custom stainless rigging by Greyson Metalworks. How wonderful it will be to sit out on that deck in warmer weather and enjoy some great food and spectacular river views!

The intimate dining room comfortably seats thirty, with added seating at the bar for twenty. The restaurant vibe is tasteful New England nautical at its best!

The restaurant’s gray and white canvas is accented with custom mahogany tables and bar by local cabinet maker Bruce Therott.

Spectacular oceanic artwork by local artist Melissa Barbieri, adorns the space with large scale oil paintings of nautical abstracts and sea creatures.

We started our dining adventure with some of their signature cocktails from their creative cocktail menu that features martinis, premium spirits, unique cocktails, craft beer, and an all-American curated wine list.

My personal favorite was the Hot Buttered Rum, made with spiced rum, brown sugar, spiced butter batter, and cinnamon and nutmeg. Believe it or not, I made a secondary visit to Carlson's just so I could have another!

Then Chef Bledsoe starting dazzling us with his appetizers! Chef is a Johnson & Wales alum with classical training under Chef Pascal Barbot of Astrance in Paris, France. Prior to Carlson's Landing Chef Bledsoe was the Chef de Cuisine at Arrive Hotel in Palm Springs, CA and the Head Chef at The Danforth Inn in Portland, ME.

The all-day menu is seasonally and geographically inspired featuring  both land and sea favorites.

Fish house favorites include a classic fishwich, deviled crab fritters, fried calamari with pickled sweet peppers and chipotle aioli, a buttery lobster roll, and market-fresh fish.  Chef is also steaming little neck clams in ham broth and charred leeks (CAN YOU SAY YUMMMM??!!)  and making a unique dish of tuna meatballs with pomodoro sauce and grilled crostini.

We loved the earthiness and subtle Mediterranean flavor perspective that Chef Bledsoe brings to Carlson's Landing.

Our visit was highlighted by the elevated dining experience and hospitality that our host, Robert Rabine, is known for. Thank you Robert and Kyle for a wonderful evening!

The cherished town tradition takes place at this stunning holiday décor destination which is transformed into Santa’s Workshop sponsored by Greenwich Catholic School, where visitors can have their photo taken with Santa, and Santa’s Village, where families have the opportunity to visit the reindeer, enjoy train and carousel rides and select food trucks on the weekend, all just minutes from downtown Greenwich.
“The Annual Greenwich Reindeer Festival is such a wonderful event in our town during the holidays and I am looking forward to celebrating the 11th season this year, “says Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei, “I encourage residents to see what makes this such an anticipated holiday experience every year.”
The community is invited to Sam Bridge Nursery & Greenhouses to visit Santa’s Workshop and for photos with Santa. While waiting for the reindeer to arrive, guests can enjoy refreshments from Planet Pizza, face painting, balloon art, and dance performances by Allegra Dance of Greenwich.
Children, adults, corporate groups, and even pets (on leashes) can have their photo taken with Santa at Santa’s Workshop sponsored by Greenwich Catholic School. Photo packages begin at $29.99 and include a special Shop & Dine Greenwich Gift Bag filled with Greenwich merchant information and hundreds of dollars in savings redeemable at participating stores and restaurants in Greenwich. Digital photos are provided on a USB drive. Enter the Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich Raffle, to win a Mercedes-Benz Children's Bicycle with every photo with Santa (one raffle per family). Raffle drawing by Santa takes place Tuesday, December 24 at 3:00 PM.

Throughout the four weeks, the reindeer will make Sam Bridge their home, thanks to Reindeer Stable Sponsor, Pepsi.  Children can enter the "PEPSI NAME THE REINDEER CONTEST" and submit their favorite reindeer names in a ballot box at Sam Bridge Nursery & Greenhouses. Santa will draw the winning names on December 20th where they will be displayed at Sam Bridge Nursery & Greenhouses. Three winners and three winning reindeer names will be chosen.
"Greenwich has many cherished traditions, and the annual Reindeer Festival is certainly one of them, says First Selectman-electFred Camillo, “We look forward to celebrating the 11th season as much as the first ten!"

The 2019 #GWFF Recap

September has been such a busy month!

As much as we loved all the traveling we did, we couldn't wait to get back to Connecticut at the end of the month to head on up to Greenwich Connecticut for the 9th Annual Greenwich Wine and Food Festival

The Cowboy and me!

That's right! Approximately 9-1/2 years ago Suni Unger, publisher of Serendipity Magazine, decided that Greenwich CT would be the ideal location for a premier wine and food festival. Boy, did she have it right. Now, nine 'Wine and Food Fests' later, it just keeps getting better and better!

Matt Storch interviews Valerie Bertinelli

Case in point, this year celebrity chefs like Valerie Bertinelli, Martha Stewart, Marc Murphy, David Burtkus and Geoffrey & Margaret Zakarian were on hand.

Local celebrity chefs like Robin Selden, Matt Storch, Lindsay Perkins, Bill Taibe and Mary Giuliani were in attendance.

Wait!

It only gets better! Some of our "Next Food Network Star's" fan favorite competitors like Jessica Tom, David Rose, and Christian Petroni also made appearances.

And top notch entertainment - like Michael Franti  & Spearhead, and Grammy award winning Little Big Town.

The eighth annual Burger Battle was hosted by David Burtka and featured a panel of judges including Marc Murphy, Jessica Tom, David Rose, Christian Petroni, Matt Storch, Robin Selden and Bill Taibe.

Some of my favorite moments from this year's festival were from watching the cooking demonstrations and learning little tips from the pros!

But, hands down, the Grand Tasting Tent (aka the Culinary Village) was one of the best I've ever experienced in all the years I've attended!

Here are some of the tasty treats we sampled!

And more wine!

As the sun set over the festival we wound down our night listening to the sweet sounds of Michael Franti  & Spearhead, and stayed to end the night by watching an amazing performance by Little Big Town.

Greenwich Wine + Food Fest, you've done it again! Another great year supporting a wonderful cause like Food Rescue and the local parks commission, and bringing the best of the best to Greenwich Connecticut!

Stay tuned for news of what's coming to you as this wonderful food and wine festival turns 10 and heads into their TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY for #GWFF 2020!
