At Boscov's Fall Fashion Show with David Wolfe for Fall Fashion Forecasts

Social Media Promotion

Boscov's Fall Trends Fashion Show

Friday evening I traveled to the new Boscov's at the Westfield Meriden Mall to see another of Boscov's Fall Fashion Shows, this one hosted by David Wolfe, creative director of the Doneger Groupto discuss Fall 2015 Fashion Trends.

David Wolfe has the unique and challenging job of forecasting upcoming trends in fashion and retail. (How fun is that??!!) And he gave all of us in the audience some tips to envision the future of fashion by telling us to look no further than the fashion shows in New York, Milan, and Paris for upcoming trends.

He informally quizzed us on what's in and out. Animal print? (still in!) and illustrated how some of the fashions from yesteryear are popping up today. 70's fashion? Yup - it's back, with flared pants, sueded fabrics, and fringe, fringe, and more fringe.

On Friday he put together a fun fashion show filled with Boscov's sportswear based on this year's fall runway trends, but scaled them back so the average American woman could wear them.

Some of the trends for Fall 2015 are:

  • Texture
  • Color
  • Prints/Mixing Prints
  • 70's Fringe

Eye Candy

And here's Part One of the runway show that Wolfe dubbed as "Eye Candy"

You can already see how the trends have taken us by storm with the faux suede swing jacket over a fringed mini skirt, this boldly patterned shift dress, and this cozy short sleeved textured knit top and classic black skirt.

And how about a cute dress?

These were three great picks, a hot pink dress topped with a cognac faux leather moto jacket, a purple and black satin dress, and a comfortable 3/4 sleeve knit jewel toned watercolor dress.

These fabulous dresses were followed by a trio of gorgeous prints and colors. A great grey patterned jacket, a classic plaid shirt with jeans with the volume pumped UP with colors, and the crowd loved the mixing Aztec patterns worn by the model on the far right.

And a repeat from Tuesday's affordable fashion show was again my favorite, this fringed skirt by Skyes The Limit  currently $49.00, which was paired with a cowl neck chartreuse top.

Easy Wearing

Then Wolfe introduced Part Two of the Boscov's Fall Fashion show that he called "Easy Wearing" - again incorporating some of the  forecasted Fall 2015 Fashion Trends.

Note the beautiful textures in soft knits, carefree denim and corduroy, and a richly colored cognac puffy vest with faux suede leggings.

Next were some easy paired career pieces, with a bright red jersey with a long patterned skirt, a sharp plaid swing jacket with a pencil skirt, and a classic long sleeved shift dress topped by an animal print puffy vest.

Some more street and comfort fashion. I loved both the long sweater jacket and cropped tops, and who wouldn't love a shimmery sequined hot pink jersey tee?

My favorite look from the easy wear selections was this adorable outfit, featuring a faux fur vest over a high low hem cowl knit top paired with a tweed knit legging.

The great thing about Boscov's is their affordable pricing. Most of the items shown retail for below $50.00, which is a great way to splurge on some great fall fashion staples for YOUR wardrobe.

Affordable Fashion at Boscov's Fall Fashion Week

Social Media Promotion

SKYES THE LIMIT, EMALINE, RUBY ROAD, AND ALFRED DUNNER RUNWAY SHOW

On Tuesday evening I traveled to Meriden CT to catch the 7pm runway show at Boscov's in the Meriden Mall. Each night this week, as part of their opening celebration, Boscov's is offering a different theme for a week of Fall Fashion!

(Complete schedule here ==>http://homeplaceblogger.blogspot.com/2015/10/fashion-week-fall-2015-at-boscovs-in.html)

Tuesday night's theme was affordable fashion featuring career and sportswear by Alfred Dunner, Skyes the Limit, Emaline, and Ruby Road. The great thing about most of these lines is that each piece is available in petite, misses, and women's sizes. So, no matter your size or shape, you can still dress tres chic, at a price you'll love!

If you're not familiar with these lines, Skyes’s the Limit is a fresh and vibrant casual collection created for the youthful, ageless woman who is trend oriented and fashion conscious.

Emaline is a collection of modern separates for the “Wear to Work” needs of the modern woman, with sophisticated wardrobe essentials, basics and fashion looks.

Ruby Road is a dynamic and colorful American brand that offers unique prints with impressive embellishments. For the woman who likes to look sophisticated yet bold in her fashion choices.

Alfred Dunner collection is inspired by feminine details, beautiful color and fresh prints, ideal for a fun casual weekend, or a career minded lifestyle.

Here are some of my highlights from the show!

We started with classic black, white, and grey tones, with pops of colors. That Aztec print poncho - LOVED!

Comfy clothing - perfect for running weekend errands - and casual get togethers!

Loved the cropped pants and that cowl neck sweater on the left - super soft!

More casual clothing - animal prints are still in - as well as lace and boots with skinny jeans or leggings.

That skirt to the far right is FRINGED - love the swing when she walked - and great tones! Because really - fashion should be fun!

And pieces from these two came home with me! That sweater to the left is my new "go to" warm and comfy sweater for fall's sweater weather. And that entire outfit to the right is all mine! Loved the smock jacket, the camisole tank, and those skinny jeans in military green are FAB! (and slimming!)

If you are looking for affordable fashion - Boscov's is the place to go! Great prices - EVERY DAY - and a wide array of sizes for all body types!

In CT, be sure to visit the Boscov's at the Westfield Meriden Mall! Boscov's are also located in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Deleware, and Ohio, and you can shop online at boscovs.com

There are still a few fashion shows left to attend this week! Don't miss them!

OktoberFest at Foxwoods CT

Social Media Promotion

OktoberFest at Foxwoods!

When you think of the gaming casinos in CT - your thoughts automatically go to black jack, roulette, bingo, and slot machines.

But there is so much more to do at Foxwoods Casino than gamble! There are comedy and music shows, shopping, family shows like the Cirque Eloize, shopping, restaurant specials, shopping, and fun events like this month's OktoberFest. Oh, and did I mention shopping? In addition to some great high end stores like FolliFollie, there is also an entire outlet, the Tangier Outlets that feature just about every great store there is to feature! (Think Kate Spade, J Crew, Talbotts, Vineyard Vines - and MORE)

This month we headed up over the weekend to Foxwoods Casino and Resort to take part in their OktoberFest Celebration.

In addition to their OktoberFest $20,000 Bingo Tournament, Cedars Restaurant and the Veranda Restaurant are featuring German Food Specials - and there are OktoberFest beer kiosks set up in Cedars Tower.

We started off at Cedars Restaurant (http://www.foxwoods.com/cedars.aspx) where we sampled 8 German beers. Though I'm not a huge beer drinker there were some I loved, like the Paulaner Munchen Oktoberfest Marzen and the Kasteel Rouge - and others that were a bit to strong for me. But I'm a trooper - I sampled a sip of each. Even the sour beers. Yup - there are people that actually develop a taste for smokey, sour, and sweet beers!

We had about 30 minutes before our next stop, so we managed to get in a little shopping. Here's a little beauty I have my eye on over at FolliFollie.

And this is what I mean by there is so much more to do than game at Foxwoods -- after shopping we went bowling. That's right! BOWLING! I traded in my high heels for some bowling shoes and bowled away. And the cowboy even won a prize that night from within our little group for having the most strikes! That's my guy!!

I couldn't believe there was such a beautiful bowling alley right in Foxwoods! It's called the High Rollers Luxury Lanes and Lounge. But, you don't have to be a "high roller" to bowl there. Simply make a reservation and gather up some friends and bowl away. More info: http://www.foxwoods.com/highrollers.aspx

After bowling, we headed back up to Cedar's Restaurant for some great German Food, more German Beer, and some delicious dessert!

All in all it was a fun night to remember! And we can't wait to go back and have some more fun!

There's always fun at Foxwoods!

ChowdaFest CT 2015 Recap and Winners

Social Media Promotion

A record crowd of 8,500 gathered to judge the annual Chowdafest competition that featured 38 restaurants from 12 different states, slurping down a record 1,500+ gallons of chowder, soup and bisque in determining which is the best in New England.  Awards were won by restaurants from 8 different states.

“The voting was extraordinarily close this year versus previous years” said Jim Keenan, event director.  “I expected as much with the invitation of award winning restaurants from other states.  The level of competition was extremely high.  In some cases, just a tenth of a point or less determined the winners and only a half point separated the top from the bottom in some  categories”.

Everyone who attends Chowdafest is a judge and is encouraged to rate each entry they try on a scale from 7 to 10 with half pt intervals.  “This is a true people's choice event.  Winners aren't determined by a food critic but by you and I' said Keenan. Thousands of ballots are then scanned to determine the average rating and the restaurants with the highest rating in each category is declared the winner.

Chowdafest, presented by Stop & Shop, is the largest competition of it's kind in New England as no other event represents every New England state, showcases as many restaurants plus attracts so many people.   In other words, ChowdaFest 2015 at Sherwood Island was a Clam Slam!
Or Corn Slam!
Or Bisque Slam!
Good Lord - every soup, bisque, and chowder I sampled deserved a grand-slam prize!

And to top it off - it was a beautiful sunny day, perfectly enjoyed at the new location of Sherwood Island, which featured plenty of parking and a beautiful view of Long Island Sound. The Chowder Gods certainly smiled down on us!

But every competition - must have a winner! And here are the results of the 2015 ChowdaFest held at Sherwood Island in Westport CT on Saturday, October 11th.

While expenses are still in the process of being finalized, Keenan reports that they'll provide Community Plates enough to fund at least 100,000 meals for the food insecure which is another event record  Community Plates is a 501-c3 non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating hunger through the rescue of food from grocery stores, restaurants and farms, then delivers it to the myriad of shelters in need.

Chowdafest also raised $750 for the Friends of Sherwood Island through the sale of muffin tins that were used as sample holders.  FOSI is a non-profit group dedicated to supporting and enhancing the state park.  "I'm glad we could do something for this worthwhile group" said Keenan.  "We could have done more but we ran out of tins.  I like the tin holder concept because of it's sustainability.  People bought two for $5 and got to take them home to use afterward.  Plus you can't buy one for under $8 in a store so it was a good deal for all involved".

Dunkin Donuts was busy sampling fall flavored coffees and munckin treats.  Ocean Spray and Aquafina were handing out juices, teas and water to thirsty event goers.  Stop & Shop sampled both their New England clam chowder and their lobster bisque demonstrating their soups are restaurant quality.  MINI of Fairfield County held a customer appreciation promotion and had 60 MINI's road rally their way to Chowdafest.  They also sponsored the "MINIstrone" tent in the Italian themed Ciao-dafest section

The Great Volunteers - The Sacred Heart Pioneers
Chowdafest also set a record for the composting over 4 tons of food waste.  "Every year, we get closer to having zero waste.  Hopefully next year we'll do even better"  The sustainablility efforts were supported by City Carting who provided receptacles and provided the carting, New Milford Farms who composted the waste, Vegware who supplied the compostable cups & spoons and Sustainable America of Stamford who oversaw our efforts.
New this year were the handcrafted trophies designed by Shelton artist, Wendy Marciano.  The nautically themed trophies were made from materials found along the shoreline and were displayed in a separate awards tent for all to see during the event.  "The chefs really loved them" Keenan said.  "The awards will be showcased at their restaurants as the piece of art they are.  Handcrafted, one of kind trophies for handcrafted chowder or soup from one of a kind chefs".

Chowdafest's other food sampling areas were very popular too as attendees sampled Ocean Spray Craisins, a variety of cheese from Cabots Creamery, Italian eats at the Ciao-dafest section, salsa & chips from Taco Mexico in Norwalk along with Tostito's chips & salsas in the ChowdMex section.  The Farmer's Cow was busy sampling ice cream and lemonade made from CT farms.  Kids of all ages sampled the many flavors of Pepperidge Farm Goldfish. Every restaurant gave out the famous oyster cracker from Westminster Bakery.

Volunteers and Vendors
AAA offered free emergency service to anyone needing it in the parking lot and nearly 25% of everyone who bought a ticket did so with a AAA discount.  Courtyard by Marriott had several "stay and chow" customers who spent the weekend and enjoyed Chowdafest.  The hotel also hosted several of the out of state restaurants.  Kid's Helping Kids operated the successful ChowdaKids section, orchestrating fun kids activities.  PEZ, headquartered in Orange CT, was on hand handing out their Halloween dispensers and giving discounts to their visitor center. WEBE 108 promoted the event with on-air ticket give-aways and those who attended were given a free issue of The Beat Magazine which included a wonderful feature on Chowdafest.

"I'd like to thank our incredible restaurants who brought their "A" game and made this the most competitive competition yet.  Thank you to Stop & Shop and all our incredible sponsors, who support this event year after year.  But most of all, my thanks goes out to the myriad of volunteers who do so much in helping us make this a record breaking event.  They include the student athletes from Sacred Heart and Fairfield Universities.  The Wakeman's boys and girls club.  The Service League of Boys from Staples High School.  My good friends from the Unitarian Church in Westport, my brothers Mike & Tom and of course my wife and daughter who without their help, our continued success would not be possible" noted Keenan
Fun at ChowdaFest 2015!

Once again, another great chowdafestival thanks to Stop and Shop, the ChowdaFest people, and all the restaurants, vendors, and volunteers who supported the cause!

Jim has rounded up some great sponsors and pulled in some great volunteers - and the rest, as they say is Chowdahistory!

Save the date!

10-2-16 at Sherwood Island for next year's ChowdaFest 16!

Greenwich Wine and Food Festival 2015

Social Media Promotion

The 5th Annual Greenwich Wine and Food Festival

Over 5500 participants attended the 2015 Greenwich Wine and Food Festival held at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park on the Greenwich CT shoreline on Saturday. September 26, 2015.

The festival supports Paul Newman’s The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, an organization dedicated to providing “a different kind of healing” to children and their families coping with cancer, sickle cell anemia and other serious illnesses. All proceeds from the festival’s Kick-Off Party, live and silent auctions and direct donations benefit the organization.

This is a 'not to be missed' annual event featuring culinary celebrities, highly regarded local chefs, and nationally renowned music acts. This year, celebrity chefs included Adam Richman, Alex Guarnachelli, Geoffrey Zakarian, Rocco DiSpirito and more! And the headlining music act was the amazing Little Big Town.

This year the food was amazing and I can honestly and without hesitation say as I moved around the tent, each dish just got better and better! Here's just SOME of the highlights from my day at the Grand Tasting Event on Saturday.

Harvest Wine Bar served up their amazing Brussels Sprouts salad plus more!

Barcelona Wine Bar was carving some delicious Mangalitsa ham accompanied by some sweet tomato gazpacho -- and an incredible sangria. We could have parked ourselves at Barcelona's table and not moved for the rest of the day and been happy!

Another favorite was the Gazpacho garnished with feta cheese from Elm Restaurant.

Another favorite was Geronimo's guacamole - that they were making right at the festival!

And so, so much more!

Of course, where there is great food...let there be wine!

There were many different varieties of wines to be sampled!

We finished off the day with some sweet treats from LuLu's Exquisite Cake shop! See that mermaid to the left? It's a CAKE! Unbelievably creative!

LuLu's Exquisite Cakes

The Greenwich Wine and Food Festival is an event not to be missed. It's most definitely a foodie's delight - with something for everyone. Whether you want to get up close and personal with your favorite food network star, or get tips and hints from celebrity chefs during demonstrations - or if you just want to sample some fabulous food and drink - the Greenwich Wine and Food Festival is for you!

In addition to celebrity demonstrations - there are also local competitions!

Winner of the Burger Battle:

  • Judges Choice: Plan B
  • Peoples Choice: Westchester Burger

Winner of the Top Bartender Showdown:

  • Judges Choice: Sasha Jarufe from Harvest Wine Bar in Greenwich
  • Peoples Choice: Dimitrios Zahariadis of Highland Brass Co. in Waterbury, CT

Boscov's Opens at the Meriden Mall

Social media Promotion

There's a great new addition to the Westfield Meriden Mall in Meriden CT!

It's Boscov's - a family owned and operated department store since 1914! Specializing in everyday low prices, top designer brands, and superb customer service, you're sure to find just what you're looking for on every shopping trip! And what's more - gift wrap services are available EVERY DAY - not just for the holidays!

Opening "officially" on October 10th 2015, I visited their Meriden store earlier as part of a special promotion and charity benefit offering shoppers a preview of the store. This promotion offered shoppers the opportunity to preview and shop the store in exchange for a $5.00 donation to support a local community non-profit organization.

As you can see, Boscov's is looking forward to becoming a BIG part of the Connecticut community!

Luckily, I'm already familiar with the Boscov's retail stores so I was prepared for a shopping evening of fun! My sister worked at and opened the Dover Delaware store years before, and more recently, I was a frequent visitor to Boscov's in Clifton Park NY every time I visited my niece in New York.

On our visit we met with social media coordinator Jackie who explained the Boscov history and showed us the storyboard of the family's retail success! She explained that Boscov family descendant Al Boscov, now in his 80's, is still present in operations and remains chairman of the board. Nephew James "Jim" Boscov, was named CEO in 2014. Both Al and Jim were present at the Meriden store's opening and were making their way through every department, welcoming visitors and posing for pictures with their many shoppers!
Jackie gives an overview of the Boscov history

In an interview with the Hartford Courant, the Boscovs' explained that's how they can keep their prices low - having family as their only stockholders allows the customer to win on savings!

The Meriden Boscov's did not disappoint with savings and selection!

It had a great range of items - everything from housewares, to clothing, to furniture to home decor! And, did I mention a fully stocked gourmet candy counter where fresh fudge is manufactured every day?

AND MADE ON PREMISE FUDGE!

On my trip I was especially wowed by the careerwear with items from Calvin Klein and Evan Picone, but always the "shoe gal' I spent most of my time in the shoe and accessories department, perusing fall shoe and boot fashions, fun accessories, stylish jewelry, scarves, and handbags.
