NIXS Hartford - New Chef - New Look - New Nixs

NIXS in the Front Street District

in Hartford CT
unveils New Look

NIXS Hartford location is all set to relaunch with an extensive renovation, an enhanced NEW menu and an elite top chef.
Always ahead of the curve, NIXS Hartford location is looking forward to the grand opening of the downtown UCONN campus and Graduate School this summer, NIXS restaurant in Hartford has recently completed an ambitious $100,000 renovation. The sleek, chic and unique décor features custom-made furniture and booths.  Part of the stunning redesign will include an all new café for takeout salads, sandwiches, pastas and espresso set to open this spring, and a large portion of the investment includes an expanded menu created by the restaurant’s new executive chef.

The popular chef Phil Parisse, formerly of Rizzuto's Restaurant in West Hartford, has put his touch on the menu, and added fresh pasta, gourmet salads, and high-end entrees to NIXS’ award-winning appetizers and contemporary cuisine. Customers can still expect the bar’s signature craft cocktails and extensive microbrew selection. NIXS has also created a new catering division to make any occasion special.  All of the company’s enhancements are captured in its new marketing campaign, appropriately titled:

“New Chef, New Look, New NIXS.”

“The Front Street district is destined to draw even more people with the completion of UCONN,” said Abner Kurtin, Managing Partner of NIXS. "We are relieved that we have settled our outstanding issues ... and plan to be part of the long-term success of the area."
In addition to NIXS’ significant financial commitment, the partners have closed their South Windsor location in order to focus solely on Hartford. The eatery’s relaunch is designed to attract both old customers, as well as new students and faculty coming to UCONN.

In fact, the restaurant is part of the UCONN welcome celebration, the Big Mo’, on Saturday, May 20th. People can enjoy tours of the campus, music, and food from NIXS and other area restaurants. Proceeds from this event support Riverfront Recapture’s parks, free public events and youth programs, while enhancing the quality of life for all who live, work, stay and learn in Metro Hartford.

NIXS is also partnering with other charities such as Camp Courant and the Greater Hartford Arts Council by supporting their fundraising events.

“From day one we have been committed to making Front Street the most vibrant entertainment complexes in the area,” added Kurtin. "“These improvements show that we are here to stay and are looking forward to an exciting future in the city.” Kurtin noted.
NIXS is one of the Front Street District's premier dining destinations for modern America small plates, contemporary cuisine, and New England micro brews. NIXS is open weekdays for lunch, happy hour, and dinner. On the weekends join them for dinner starting at 4pm, followed by the best nightlife in the city- live bands, DJ’s, and Connecticut's best craft cocktails.

Play Nice at NIXS Hartford Restaurant

NIXS Hartford 2014
NIXS Hartford - #PlayNice

The Front Street District in Hartford is abuzz with activity. With the recent opening of the Infinity Theater and Ted's Montana Grille, as well as last year's opening of the Capital Grille the area just keeps getting better and better.  With the Connecticut Convention Center directly across the street on Columbus Avenue, the Hartford riverfront district is quickly becoming a destination area, with great food and fun entertainment.

NIXS Hartford, another recent addition to Front Street, is mixing the two with an eclectic menu, a chic industrial modern interior, and a nightlife vibe with its launch of club music on weekends.

NIXS Hartford - Exterior Day

We headed up on a late August Tuesday night for a sampling of some of the snacks, small plates, and large plates available off their extensive menu that features raw bar offerings, sea, land, and garden items, as well as ala carte dinners, and 'comfort' sides.

We started with cocktails off their Specialty Signature Drink menu, taking recommendations from our waiter Christopher. The cocktail menu is fun and features items such as the Beach Please (made with house infused pineapple vodka), Strawberry Rhubarb Smash (Temptation Bourbon and Rhubarb Bitters), Bazzle Dazzle (Bombay Gin, muddled basil), Bad Wolf, (Rye, honey syrup, orange and lemon juice), and the William Fly Tai (Pyrat Rum, Lime Juice, Amaretto).. I elected to stray from my usual sweet drink craving and instead selected the Dirty Rotten Scoundrel (Belvedere Vodka, olive brine, capers, and a blue cheese stuffed olive). It was just what I was hankering for, the smooth vodka, infused with briny flavor, was suitable for sipping throughout the evening.

Moving on to our snacks we sampled pickled beets from the day's chef's daily pickling menu...

...and we learned about Captain Nix's Tasting Trio, a special that changes daily and features the Chef's daily tacos, paired with three shooters from the signature cocktail menu.

From the Snack Menu we tried the Candied Bacon Deviled Eggs, a delicious starter item, with the smokey bacon flavor permeating through the creamy yolk filling.

We also sampled the fillings from some of their more popular small bites, a tender pork belly, tuna, and chuck lobster from their famous "Best Damn Lobster Roll". Each bite was delightful and set the mark high for the items that followed.

Next on the small plates menu were a two types of Tater Tots, a sweet crab and lobster.

Next we sampled the tacos, two made with soft flour tacos and the other with a crispy corn taco.  The first was Braised Short Rib Tacos with creamy black beans, green apple slaw, and goat cheese fondue. Of course, these were the Cowboy's favorite, the tender beef was braised to perfection and the apple slaw added a wonderful tang.

These were followed by the Crispy Fish Tacos with avocado, cilantro sour cream, pico de gallo. The cilantro sour cream and the pico de gallo elevated the flavor to what might have otherwise been a simple dish.

Rounding out the tacos, were one of my favorite small plates of the night, the Tuna Tartare Tacos with avocado, cilantro, and spicy sesame mayo.

Also available from the Garden Small Plates menu are a variety of flat bread pizzas. We sampled the Margherita Flat Bread made with tomatoes, basil, mozzarella, and drizled with extra virgin olive oil. Also available is a Wild Mushroom Flat Bread made with Fontina val d' aosta, arugula and ricotto salato.

We sampled NIXS' Chicken Wings that are available in classic hot, honey dijon, or ginger soy.

It was with the large plates menu that we really found our groove. NIXS Grilled Hangar Steak with a spicy chimichurri sauce. The sauce enhanced the flavors of the char-grilled steak, which was cooked to perfection for the cut, a beautiful medium rare.

But perhaps my favorite large plate was the Bad Ass Roasted Chicken, with sweet corn, onions, and bacon, roasted with rosemary.  While rosemary typically isn't one of my favorite spices, this chicken was fantastic, with great fall holiday flavors in every bite.

Our last Large Plate selection was NIXS version of Surf and Turf, a  grilled swordfish with candied pork belly. I had tried this combination at the NIXS VIP Opening in a small bite sample so I wasn't surprised at the unusual pairing and already knew how well it worked together. The silky richness of the pork was the perfect accompaniment to the well seared swordfish. The swordfish, just a tad bit overdone due to the super sear, was still moist and flavorful.

We sampled two of NIXS sides, the Herb Risotto and the Smoked Mac and Cheese. The risotto was excellent, and a wonderful large portion perfect for sharing on our upcoming cool autumn nights. And the Smoked Mac and Cheese was everything I hoped it would be, creamy, cheesy, melt in your mouth good.

Our dessert course allowed us to be a little 'hands-on' with our food! A plateful of still warm Zeppoles with a two sides of filling that we could inject ourselves!  A creamy vanilla custard and a sweet caramel sauce!  What fun!

Other desserts included a S'more Parfait with caramel pudding, graham crackers, and roasted marshmallows, Scotch & Cereal, a 12 year old scotch infused with Captain Crunch Cereal Milk, accompanied by a Captain Crunch Treat scotch caramel treat. Although the S'more Parfait did include some chocolate chips, the consensus at the table was that it needed a bit more chocolate to live up to its s'more counterpart. We also sampled a dessert cocktail, the Root Beer Float, a frothy little concoction packed with flavor, a light ending to wonderful meal.

Through out the evening General Manager Yaz and Executive Chef John made themselves available to answer questions, checking in frequently with us, as well as other dining patrons.

We loved the casual vibe that NIXS offers, and we're certain that it will soon become a favorite stop for Hartford dining and drinks. Service is friendly and fast paced.

NIXS Hartford VIP Red Carpet Cocktail Party

What an amazing time was had by all at the Pre-Opening NIXS Hartford VIP Red Carpet Cocktail Party!

All of Hartford turned out for this fun event where we learned all about the #PlayNice philosophy, with emphasis on teamwork, community, fun, and Hartford love!

Did you know that as part of the hiring process NIXS management sent the prospective employees on a scavenger hunt in Hartford as a way of gauging their ability to work as team, demonstrate leadership skills, and work together for a common goal. What the participants or future employee "contestants" didn't know, was that a 'mole' was planted in each group who watched how the team pulled together to #PlayNice, demonstrate critical thinking, get to know one another's strengths quickly, and learn all about Hartford!

What a great employment tactic!

What a great way to learn about Hartford and the Hartford Community! And even though all the staff was on their first day the night of this event - it was evident that they had all bonded during the scavenger hunt and worked well together as a team.

I tell you... I love this place and the way they think, work, and play! And you will TOO!

RUN --  don''t walk to this fabulous addition to the Front Street District when it opens the weekend of August 16th 2014!

Here are some photos from the Red Carpet Event!

And look...even I got in on the Red Carpet excitement and posed for the paparazzi!

The party-goers got to get in on the #PlayNice fun too! Each attendee was given two tokens to vote for their favorite cocktail samples. The winners will go on the NIXS Hartford Specialy Cocktail menu!

I told you you'd love this place!!!

Nixs Restaurant and Lounge Opening & Hiring for July 2014

Press Release

Nixs Hartford Is Opening Downtown in the Capital City
and Slated To Open End of July 2014.

Nixs Hartford will be open for business by the end of July on 40 Front Street in downtown Hartford. Paying tribute to the Boston Harbor Island, Nix’s Mate, Nixs is a sophisticated neighborhood lounge, bar and restaurant that will seat 180 guests with private dining space available.

Nixs is bringing something that is a welcome addition to downtown Hartford – NIGHTLIFE!

Nixs calendar will feature “Premier Saturdays,” live bands, special DJ events, and top local and national entertainment.

“Nixs is very much a lounge, with a lot of soft seating and room to move around. It’s a modern, high style space with clean lines, high tops, semi circle booths and an industrial feel. We’ll be bringing in top DJs to get Hartford on their feet. It’s the type of place where power suit jackets will come off and power heels will be kicked to the side after dark as the music comes on,” says Abner Kurtin, Managing Partner.

They're Hiring for their July Opening:
Nixs Hartford is hosting a hiring fair June 30th and July 1st from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm at the Spotlight Theatre, located at 39 Front Street in Hartford, right across from the restaurant. They will be hiring 40 employees including bartenders, servers, bottle service/cocktail servers, bussers, hosts, runners, shift supervisors, line cooks, expo prep and dishwashers.

Applicants who make it past the first round of interviews will participate in a special final audition downtown. The scavenger hunt will take place on July 2nd from 1:00 – 4:00 pm and will test the applicants’ ability to solve problems on the fly and get along with their future coworkers in a group setting - all while exploring downtown Hartford.

“We’re very excited for the fourth location of Nixs. Hartford is developing into the thriving city that we’ve all been hoping for,” explains Kurtin. “We’re right across from the Convention Center where the Front Street community is growing with increasing foot traffic each week. And now UConn is bringing students back to the city. We’re in a tremendous position for growth,” Kurtin says.

The Menu:

The bar and lounge offer New England microbrews, premium wines and hand-crafted cocktails that can be served by the half carafe or full carafe for sharing. House-made bottled cocktails will be a special feature at the bar – the Moscow Mistress is a favorite at Nixs.

Nixs Hartford will be offering a menu that complements the current neighboring establishments in the Front Street District – a fresh, unique raw bar and fun small plates perfect for sharing, with a focus on seasonally inspired fare.

“From the sea” tapas include tuna tartar tacos, fresh oysters and clams, mini fish & chips, lobster rolls, and tuna sashimi. Small plates “from the land” include BBQ Buffalo chicken dip, braised short rib tacos, Nixs chicken wings, and Margherita flatbread.

There are a variety of fresh salads and sandwiches that are perfect for lunch, including the tuna capraccio nicoise, crispy fish tacos and the Gallop cheeseburger. Entrees and large plates include the seafood tower, grilled hanger steak, roasted chicken, and swordfish.

Desserts are freshly made - such as Nixs’ famous Italian doughnuts, Zeppoles, and s’mores parfait.

The Floor Plan:

The floor plan will feature a private dining room and many options for semi-private parties - making Nixs well-suited and flexible for events and business functions for up to 250 people. The William Fly Room seats up to 10 guests for a more intimate event, with a TV in this room that has options to hook up a computer for presentations or an iPod for custom playlists. The lounge area comfortably entertains 20 – 40 people for a cocktail reception.

The modern industrial décor will feature mirrors, TVs, a wine wall, stone and the bar is a natural edge wood.

The Legend behind The Curse of William Fly

Nix's Mate is one of the smaller islands in the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. In 1726, upon his arrest, officials brought pirate captain William Fly to Boston, where he was executed. His body was then gibbetted on Nix's Mate to serve as a warning to sailors not to turn to piracy. Before his execution, Fly famously scolded the hangman for incorrectly securing the noose, then retied it himself. His body, with those of two other pirates, is buried on the island. Pleading not guilty to the end, one pirate predicted the Island would sink into the sea to prove his innocence. Since 1803, the island has disappeared each day in high tide.
