ON20 Restaurant - The Best View in Hartford CT

On the twentieth floor of a Hartford, CT skyscraper is the beautiful ON20 Restaurant.

Once a private club with an esteemed reputation, the restaurant opened to the public over a decade ago, allowing all of Hartford county to feast on great food and the best view in Connecticut.
The View at ON20
And I'm not exaggerating about the best view in Connecticut --- ON20 was recently named one of the 100 Best Scenic Restaurants in the United States in Open Table's Diner Choice Awards.

I have to admit, the view is amazing, featuring the Hartford skyline on one side

and the scenic river district on the other.

The moment you step off the elevator, you know you are in for a treat as you approach the beautifully crafted doors announcing you've arrived to ON20.

Welcome to ON20
Welcome to ON20!

ON20's recent Taste of Autumn and Media Fall Preview, also served to be a celebration for not one, but TWO awards this month! First, being voted one of the 100 most scenic places as noted, AND, secondly, Connecticut Magazine's choice of best new chef -- ON20's own Executive Chef,  Jeffrey Lizotte!

From CT Magazine: 2013 Best New Chef

Of course, the food was spectacular!

And, we were treated to a meet and greet and live demonstration by Chef Lizotte, who explained his strategy for the restaurant's farm to table commitment, and their partnership with Connecticut grown farms, and local sourcing from Starlight Gardens Durham, CT; Freshpoint in Hartford, CT;  Browne Trading in Portland ME, D'Artagnan in Newark, NJ, Gulf Shrimp Company in Plantsville, CT, and the Farmer's Cow in Lebanan, CT.

Here's some of the wonderful appetizers we sampled:

After mingling and meeting everyone, we moved to the expansive bar area where we sampled some of bartender Hun's creations. ON20 has a wonderful signature cocktail menu, but on this visit Hun asked if in addition we would like to also try some new concoctions that he would create based on our personal flavor preferences.

We loved them all, but hands down, our favorite was the Chocolate Espresso Martini, shown to the far left above, garnished with the traditional three coffee beans, representing health, wealth, and happiness.

We then sampled some of the delicious items found on the bar menu
Parmesan Truffle Cheese Fritters, Gremolata

Sirloin Burger, Comte, Brioche Bun, Cornichon Aioli, Sweet Potato Fries

Mustard-Miso Chicken Tater Tots, Curry Coconut Emulsion

Spinach & Artichoke Dip , HBC Breadsticks

Out of all the bar snacks, I enjoyed the burger the most. It was cooked wonderfully, nice and juicy, and the Cornichon Aioli was wonderful. It had a nice smokey flavor, with a slow warmth.

While we were there, we learned about their fall specials, a new prix-fixe lunch menu - $30.00 per guest!

Here's what's on the menu for lunch this fall:

Starters
Dumpling:
Swiss Chard and Spinach, Ricotta Salata, Sweet Potato Fondue, Walnut Vinaigrette
Salad
Roasted Beet and Radish Remoulade, Yogurt, Horseradish

Main

Eggplant Miso Parmesan
Grilled Tomato Sauce, Olive crumb Sweet Basil
Pork
Confit of Shoulder, Finterling Potaato, Mustard Greens, Roasted Grapes
Fluke
Oven Broiled, Shaved Summer Squash, Sun Dried Tomato

Sweet

Melon
Mosaic of Compressed Melon, Piment D'Espelette Sorbet, Lemon Verbena Puree
Corn
Butter and Sugar Corn Creme Caramel, White Chocolate, Brioche Streusel

ON20 offers a breathtaking view with equally exciting food.

Join them for lunch, happy hour and snacks, or dinner.

There's something for everyone!

Join me in congratulating Chef Lizzotte and Hartford's ON20!

Neville Wisdom - Fall 2013 Fashion Show - New Haven CT

The 9th Square in New Haven CT is abuzz with activity.

Great food, art, music, design, fashion and lifestyle events are all happening in this historic district. To highlight the eclectic array of merchants in the area, the 9th Square, or #On9 holds monthly #FirstFriday of the month events.

September's First Friday Event was billed as #BreatheOn9 and was set to feature healthy living via outdoor dining by restaurants Bentara and Palmeria, free Zumba and Yoga to kickoff  FITWEEK®, local fashions, a visit by the chic minibus Vinthrapologie, and MORE!

But the highlight of this First Friday's event for me was the amazing fall fashions shown by Neville Wisdom, owner and designer at NW - Neville's Fashion Design Studio.
Pictured above: (L) Neville Wisdom welcomes everyone, (R) the event venue prior to the crowds arrival.

The event was amazing! As a customer of Neville's I was able to secure reserved seating for four, but the event, and all #On9 events are ALL open to the public.. I also recommended that a friend, Hilary, of My Own Blog Review,  model in the show, and was so happy for her when she made the "cut" !!

The event did not disappoint.

Here's a sample of my instagram feed from my fellow social media advocates.
Source: Instagram OneWomansStyleEvolution, CTBloggers, MyOwnBlogReview- Quotes below
(L) Natasha from One Woman Style Revolution says "What a wonderful setup. Hartford, we have to do better"
 (C) In their Insta-video, Wendy from  CT Bloggers posts "
Whoa! Hilary is fierce!"
(R) After the show Hilary, of MOBR says, "
This guy @SalonLulu is responsible for this killer hair! Love him!"

The entire block of Orange Street in front of Neville's studio was closed off, and the black asphalt 'runway' made for a great urban catwalk! Look for a future post interviewing the amazing Neville Wisdom, but for now, you'll have to settle for a photo-recap of the looks from the show

Apologies in advance for the poor picture quality - our days are getting shorter in New England - and dusk settled in right as the show began.

And if you want to get a REAL feel for the show - PUMP UP THE VOLUME to

Fabulous draping;  color-block mixes; boldly patterned coats; well-tailored jackets; criss-cross backs;  and a warm saturation of colors throughout, were some of my personal observations and favorite design elements from the show.

Following the event, we were all invited in to Neville's design space for some advance shopping!

If you have a chance, stop by his design studio and peruse his fall line.

The Capital Grille in Hartford, CT

Press Release: Hartford CT welcomes the Capital Grille, a fine dining destination, on September 9, 2013.

As soon as Hartford CT's newest addition, The Capital Grille's, opening was announced, I knew I wanted to be a part of their preview dining experience. And oh, what an experience it was!
The Capital Grille Hartford CT
The Capital Grille - Hartford CT

With easy access off of CT's I-91, the Capital Grille will be "must" for a fine dining destination in Hartford CT's  Front Street District. Located directly across the street from the Connecticut Convention Center, the restaurant also offers valet parking in the evening, a welcome addition to the sometimes problematic parking situations in Hartford. With seating for 239 guests, and three private dining areas, the ability to have easy access to dining gives the Capital Grille a plus!

We arrived a tiny bit early, and even though our table was ready, we asked if we could start in the lounge area so we could experience the bar vibe. We scored a seat and inquired about wines by the glass and signature cocktails. Luckily for me, Jackie behind the bar had my favorite Riesling by the glass, and poured my friend Gayle a sample of their signature Stoli-Doli, a cocktail martini made with Stoli vodka that has marinated with pineapples. For the wine connoisseurs, the wine menu is extensive, offering over 350 New and Old World selections.
Red wines are kept cool at 58o and whites chilled to 45o.

In the lounge, a private party had gathered, who, when they saw me taking pictures, insisted I come over to photograph some of the appetizers that were available for their party. Everything looked amazing, from the pancetta wrapped scallops - to fried calamari - to the artfully arranged chops. Beautiful!
Party Appetizers
We moved on to the dining room, a large, tastefully decorated room. The back dining areas also offers an open view of the kitchen. There's a playful twist to the modern decor, a delightful mix of Mad Men meets Rat Pack Vegas. I loved the contemporary artwork, the private "club" atmosphere, and the roomy comfortable seating.

The menu offers ala carte entrees with separate shared sides. Appetizers are available with plentiful portions well suited for two.

We started our meal with warm fresh breads and rolls, with butter infused or sprinkled with aged cheese, which added a wonderful nutty bite. For appetizers, we had the prosciutto wrapped fresh  mozzarella (hand pulled on premise) with vine ripe tomatoes, and a smoked salmon platter.

For dinner, we had the Sliced Filet Mignon with Cipollini Onions and Wild Mushrooms

the Dry Aged Steak au Poivre with Courvoisier Cream Sauce.

A quick note: Have you ever tried dry aged beef before? The advantage to dry aging is the concentration and saturation of the beef's flavors, as well as the tenderness that occurs from the moisture content evaporating from connective tissues. It is typically only available in high-end butcher shops, and upscale steak houses(Source Bon Apetit)

And, lastly, the Seared Tenderloin with Butter Poached Lobster Tails

All the proteins were presented beautifully, and prepared perfectly.

The beefs were well rested, and cooked according to our requests. Jason, our server, carefully explained the Capital Grille's specifications for medium ( a warm pink center) and medium rare (warm, red center) just as ordered. The lobster was poached perfectly, and executed well. We detected an ever so slight saltiness to the lobster meat, likely due in part to its setting atop the crusted seared outside of the tenderloin, and having been poached in salted butter, enhancing the richness and flavors of the dish.

Accompanying our meal we ordered a shared side of Grilled Asparagus with Lemon Oil which was quite delicious.

Grilled Asparagus with Lemon Oil
Grilling the asparagus brings out the sweetness of the vegetable, and the lemon infused oils added a brightness to its flavor. The perfect pairing to all our meals.

We ended our meal with coffee, cappuccinos, and the Chef's selection of desserts, consisting of a sugary sweet Coconut Cream Pie ( vanilla crust layered with whipped and coconut creams.) and a Classic Crème Brûlée ( the traditional caramelized sugared crust over the creamiest of custards)

There is little to find fault with at Capital Grille. Service is impeccable, we were greeted by name, our server was knowledgeable about menu items and their preparation. Management was attentive, gracious, hospitable, and accommodating  There is truly a retro meets modern day vibe to the setting. My only complaint would be that the signs for valet parking could be better marked and more visible.

After dinner we rounded up some friends who were also dining at the Capital Grille and shared some laughs before departing for the evening.
