Noodles On9 in New Haven

Here's a fun event taking place this week! 

The Town Green District is holding ttheir second annual Noodles On9- a street festival take over Orange St in New Haven’s Historic 9th Square on Friday, October 6 from 6pm to 8pm.  In conjunction with the opening reception for City Wide Open Studios this will be a fun event with something for everyone! 

Noodles  On9 will feature your favorite 9th Square restaurants with noodle dishes ranging from ravioli to rice noodles. Craft cocktails, beer and wine will be available for purchase.  In addition, a DJ pumping up the music and performance art on the street will highlight the viewing of over 400 artist commissions inside Artspace that will make this an event not to be missed. 

Noodles On9 is free, family friendly and open to the public.

This month we were able to participate in one of my favorite events courtesy of the folks from @DowntownNHV at ....

New Haven's First Friday!

Through seasonal months, on the first Friday of the month, the downtown New Haven peeps, celebrate all that is wonderful about the Greatest Small City in America (GSCIA) and throw a different "crawl" type event!  Each month has a theme, and December's theme has traditionally been about COOKIES!!!

Yup! In spite of being known mostly for pizza and a certain ivy league college - New Haven also has some pretty terrific bakeries and restaurants that donate cookies to this sweet event! After being called #CookiesOn9 for the past few years, this year they decided to spread out beyond the historic 9th Square into more parts of downtown New Haven. Woot! Woot! That just made it bigger and better than ever - and to incorporate more of the city it's now headlined #NHVcookies!

We checked in and received our cookie totes - and were asked if we were interested in taking part in one of Baobab Tree Studio's latest projects, the  "New Haven Story Project" - this one highlighting holiday cookie stories!

We shared some of our stories about cookie disasters (me) - and who our cookie bakers are (Gayle) and how our baking traditions all were passed down from our grandmother's kitchens (Carol). It was great fun to be in the recording studio and be part of this home grown initiative! (Learn more about the New Haven Story Project HERE)

Then we commenced with the cookie crawl!

In no particular order, here are some of the places we stopped. Some were cookie stops, and others were beverage stops, and there were also places to go for fun children's activities.

Claire's Cornercopia, known for their vegan menu, was offering up gluten free coconut macaroons and vegan pumpkin cookies.

Capture Salon is one of the prettiest places we stop at as the interior is beautiful and they decorate for the holidays in the most amazing ways! The red and white theme matches their contributing "peppermint" hot chocolate! This year they offered fun holiday gear for photo ops and gifted us with keepsake Capture cups!

Elm City Market to Hold Special Events in March 2015

All are welcome to drop by the market for International Women’s Day, March Mardis Gras, Soul de Cuba, a Night of Noodles, and Cheese 101; the market will also hold special discount days

Elm City Community Market, Inc., an employee-owned marketplace located in the heart of New Haven, Conn announced that it will be holding several tasting events  and celebrations throughout the month of March. At these events, patrons are invited to enjoy various foods and celebrate special days throughout the month while learning about the history and preparation of several ethnic dishes.
 

“This month, we’re holding a Day of Indulgence just for women, March Mardis Gras, a Night of Noodles, a special Cheese 101 event focusing just on sheep’s milk cheeses, and much more,” said Elm City Market event organizer Alexa Apotria. “Customers also won’t want to miss our $2 off our house-made hot bar every weekday in March from 3 to 5 pm, and National Cold Cut Day discounts on March 3.”

Special tasting events include:

• March 8 – A Day of Indulgence: March 8^th is International Women’s Day, and Elm City Market will celebrate by inviting all women to shop on this day and enjoy free minute massages, delectable samples throughout the store and special prize giveaways. Some wellness items will also be available for purchase at a discounted rate. All day.

• March 10 – Mardi Gras ECM Style!: At 5:30 pm, Elm City Market invites all patrons to celebrate Mardi Gras in March, as it displays the tastes of New Orleans for customers to sample and purchase.

• March 19 - Soul de Cuba @ ECM: Soul de Cuba returns to Elm City Market to stir up some culturally inspired dishes through the Cuban and African tradition of food and art. Patrons are invited to enjoy this cooking demonstration at 5:30 pm.

• March 20 – A Night of Noodles: Elm City Market will host a storewide tasting event from 5-7 pm for patrons to explore various noodle dishes including cold and hot, spicy and sweet, and from every corner of the world. The market will provide information and history about the noodles, samples and recipe cards for patrons to take home.

• March 25 - Cheese 101: All About Sheep’s Milk: At 6:30 pm, Elm City Market invites customers to learn about and taste a variety of sheep’s milk cheeses from around the country. At the end of the class, a pop quiz winner will receive a surprise treat to take home. 

Special discount day events include:

• March 3 – National Cold Cut Day!: Elm City Market will offer 20% off all freshly cut deli meats and cheese for the entire day.

• Monday-Friday, throughout March - ECM Happy Hour: From 3-5 pm each weekday in March, Elm City Market will offer patrons a special “Happy Hour” discount of $2.00 off of the normal price per pound of food from its house-made hot bar.

Elm City Market to Hold Tasting Events and Contest in January 2015

All are welcome to come and enjoy tasting events throughout the month, learn about healthy food options, and participate in a New Year, New You campaign

 Elm City Community Market, Inc., an employee-owned marketplace located in the heart of New Haven, Conn., today announced that it will be holding several tasting events throughout January. At these events, patrons are invited to enjoy various foods while learning about healthy food options. At the end of the month, from January 19-26, customers are encouraged to participate in Elm City Market’s “New Year, New You – Eat Healthy, Take a Selfie” contest to promote healthy eating.

“We’re excited to meet and interact with our customers and teach them about healthy food options this month,” said Elm City Market Outreach Coordinator Alexa Apotria. “We’re proud to start the New Year off healthy and can’t wait to get our customers involved, too.”

 The “Superfoods Add Purpose” Tasting Event will take place on January 14 from 5:30-7:30 pm. Elm City Market invites customers to enjoy tastings of local super food products, learn about super foods, and take home recipes to make healthy dishes at home. Patrons can also enter a raffle to win prizes and more.

A “This or That Tasting Event” will occur from 12-2:00 pm on January 24. All are welcome to come and make their way through tons of samples. At each table, participants will have an opportunity to vote for what they like better, this or that. Elm City Market will provide interesting health facts about every food that is sampled to show participants the healthiest options.

Cheese 101: Which Cheddar is Better?, will take place at 6:30 pm on January 28. Elm City Market will offer many different cheddar cheeses and will pair them uniquely with different tastes. All are welcome to come and talk and taste cheddar, the most widely purchased cheese in the world that is always made from cow’s milk.

Elm City Market will also be the first stop in the Taste of New Haven's  “On 9 Tour” on January 24, which offers participants the chance to sample delicacies from eateries in and around the Ninth Square. At Elm City Market, participants will sample, smell and see local foods and produce. The tour begins at 3 pm and participants are encouraged to arrive 10 minutes early.

From January 19 through January 26, customers are invited to participate in the Eat Healthy, Take a Selfie campaign by taking a selfie with their favorite healthy food in the market and posting it to Elm City Market’s Facebook wall and tagging themselves in the comments. At the end of the week, a winner will be chosen at random to receive a gift basket filled with fun, new, healthy products.

Spotlight on New Haven CT Fashion Designer Neville Wisdom

A few days after Neville Wisdom's amazing ON9 Fall Fashion Show, I had the opportunity to watch the creative genius at work, and sit down and talk with the lead designer himself in his studio on Orange Street in New Haven, CT.

Friend and fellow blogger Natasha, publisher of  One Woman's Style Evolution, arranged the interview by working her Jamaican connections. She knew someone who knew someone, and there we were, sitting face to face with Neville Wisdom and learning a little about his life story, design process, and his creative journey.

So how does a self-described little "spearfishing Jamaican boy" end up as one of Connecticut's leading fashion designers? 

His story has many twists and turns, beginning with learning the creative process of sewing and design from his mother, studying the culinary arts in vocational school, enrolling in fashion design courses, interning with a tailor in Jamaica, forming a creative partnership with a clothing designer in Kingston, eventually arriving in America to learn carpentry and home interior craftsmanship from his father. 

All the while supporting himself working in the medical field, operating a fashionable boutique in the Westville section, real estate investments and property management, and, finally, his creative dream realized, opening his own design studio in New Haven's Historic Ninth Square district.

Over the course of our two hour interview, in his soft spoken Jamaican accent he explained his background, creative journey, and design philosophies.

Two stories of his experiences stood out to me.

The first, in an internship with a tailor in Jamaica, in his initial days on the job he watched his mentor create a pair of slacks. Neville watched. learned, and absorbed the process. Anyone familiar with designing sportswear knows that pants are probably one of the most difficult items to properly create. And over the weekend, Neville, the novice, created his first pair of pants. Eager to show how much he had learned to his mentor, he returned to the studio the following Monday, and proudly showed the tailor his creation. His mentor looked at him, and told him "I have nothing more to teach you, you must leave now."

Yes, the student surpassed the teacher. And the teacher did not like it.

The second experience, the journey he described in opening the Orange Street design studio. The passion that he displayed when talking about seeing the studio for the first time, discovering the exposed brick behind the plastered walls, and eventually finding the open design space he had always envisioned.

His heritage from both parents, in the ability to create design through textile from his mother, and brick and mortar design from his father, and all the hopes and dreams that brought him to New Haven, apparently all came together, finally, in this space of creative design.

And in reflecting back on opening his studio, he remarked, "It was like being in a car and finally having control of my destination"

There's so much to like about Neville Wisdom's creations. The exquisite fit and seams, the inclusion of bright colors, the bold prints and mix of patterns, masterful draping, and amazing details.

And there's so much to like about Neville Wisdom, the man. While we were winding down our interview, a staff member from a neighboring restaurant came in and dropped off that day's daily special, because they noticed that Neville hadn't stopped in that day.

Finally, as we were leaving, Natasha asked him if he had any intentions to show in New York for the upcoming Caribbean Designer Fashion Week. Neville thought soulfully and reflected for a minute, and mentioned he wasn't sure if his designs were meant to go in that direction.  I then asked good naturedly, "you mean the New Haven fashion scene here is not so bad" to which he quickly responded with a bright smile, "yes, the New Haven fashion scene is not so bad; in fact, it's great."

Such good news for us in New Haven! It sounds like Neville Wisdom's Design Studio is here to stay.

Neville Wisdom - Fall 2013 Fashion Show - New Haven CT

The 9th Square in New Haven CT is abuzz with activity. 

Great food, art, music, design, fashion and lifestyle events are all happening in this historic district. To highlight the eclectic array of merchants in the area, the 9th Square, or #On9 holds monthly #FirstFriday of the month events.

September's First Friday Event was billed as #BreatheOn9 and was set to feature healthy living via outdoor dining by restaurants Bentara and Palmeria, free Zumba and Yoga to kickoff  FITWEEK®, local fashions, a visit by the chic minibus Vinthrapologie, and MORE! 

But the highlight of this First Friday's event for me was the amazing fall fashions shown by Neville Wisdom, owner and designer at NW - Neville's Fashion Design Studio.

The event was amazing! As a customer of Neville's I was able to secure reserved seating for four, but the event, and all #On9 events are ALL open to the public.. I also recommended that a friend, Hilary, of My Own Blog Review,  model in the show, and was so happy for her when she made the "cut" !! 

The event did not disappoint.
