New Haven's Cookies on 9 2015 - Delicious!

On December 4, 2015 from 6pm-8pm we got to sample dozens of delicious cookies and other sweet treats!

The first Friday in December we traveled back to New Haven's Historic Ninth Square to participate in their Cookies On Nine event! This annual cookie crawl is always a crowd pleaser, featuring cookies baked by students in Gateway Community College's Culinary Department. And best of all - tickets are only $10.00!

We picked up our cookies carriers and off we went! The weather was unbelievable for December in Connecticut! It was about 55 degrees and beautiful weather for a cookie crawl!

We didn't get to visit every place because we tend to visit longer than we should with each participating merchant - but we loved every place we visited!

And we got A LOT OF COOKIES!!!

Wine On 9 - 2015

New Haven’s Historic 9th Square district is certainly the downtown destination for New Haven, featuring great art, food, music, and cultural activities.

Best of all, this eclectic neighborhood provides the backdrop for First Fridays On9 in New Haven.

One of my favorite On 9 events returned this year on November 6, 2015! The Wine On Nine "wine crawl" through the Ninth Square where we had the chance to visit and meet various merchants, restaurants, and organizations in the 9th Square New Haven.

At just $15.00 a ticket, this was indeed a bargain and all who participated received a keepsake wine glass for sampling, a map of the participating merchants in the neighborhood, and some delicious wine tastings from the Wine Thief.

First Fridays On9 are open-house evenings featuring creative events that showcase the wide array of shops, restaurants, marketplaces, homes, and cultural centers in the historic 9th Square neighborhood.
I gathered up what friends I could find and off we went for our little wine crawl.

We laughed and laughed and had so much fun, and in spite of temporarily losing my phone, (Thanks Reynolds Art for safekeeping!) and a twisted ankle and a misplaced car in a parking garage, we couldn't have had a better time...and we are looking forward to COOKIES ON NINE!!!

SomruS Indian Cream Liqueur Pairing at Thali New Haven

I've always loved the subtle spices and flavors from the Eastern hemisphere.

Flavors like saffron, nuts, cardamom, tumeric, mints, and more ... so I was beyond pleased when we received an invite to a cocktail and food pairing, featuring a new Indian Cream Liqueur, SomruS,  that was being held at Thali on Orange Street in New Haven's Ninth Square.

Although this wasn't my first time sampling SomruS Indian Cream Liqueur, it was my first time eating at Thali, despite having met Chef Prasad Chirnomula at the Greenwich Wine and Food Festival and being totally enamored with his passion for cooking.

After our group had assembled we got to learn all about SomruS' inception by an Indian businessman who realized that the existing cream liqueurs, while good, didn't have the beautiful light and subtle flavors of his background, and hence the development of Somrus Indian Cream Liqueur, that blends cardamom, saffron, almonds, pistachios and rose, which results in an all-natural, gluten free and Kosher liqueur.

SomruS, a rum based liqueur, whose name translates to "Nectar of the Gods" is delightfully light and smooth, with a slightly sweet and aromatic quality.

What a perfect compliment to the exotic flavors from Thali Restaurant!

We started our pairing with SomruS on the rocks. Here's where we could truly appreciate the unique flavors developed and infused in this liqueur. On just the right side of sweet, it's truly a wonderful accompaniment to Eastern cuisines.

Paired with our "Somrus on the Rocks" we sampled Gobi Manchurian and Samosa.

For our second course we sampled the Somrus Kama Sutra, a more bold mixing of flavors meant to enhance our light seafood served with it. While this was tasty, I think I'd prefer it without the Green Chartreuse, whose heavy blend of spices overpowered the light flavor of this SomruS cocktail.

The Kama Sutra otherwise paired well with Shrimp Kabob with Saag. The bold cocktail had a great balance with this light and flavorful course.

Our third course paired a variety of Thali dishes with the SomruS Mayan Rickshaw, a mixture of SomruS with Casamigos Reposada tequila.

Our dishes were Chicken Tikka Masala, Kadai Ghost, Rice, and warm flatbread.

Here's where we really experienced the pairing at its finest. The hearty cocktail enhanced and elevated the spicy and flavorful accompaniments. This was my first time eating Kadai Ghost, which was goat in a spicy sauce. Sooo good!

For dessert, we paired a Somrus Chai with Sormus Rice Pudding. This was another successful pairing. The black tea and spice with SomruS - and the rich rice pudding illuminated why SomruS truly is  ... the "Nectar of the Gods".

This rice pudding was so good, brothy, flavorful and aromatic due to the infusion of SomruS. That's right! You can cook and bake with Somrus too!

Elm City Community Market, Inc., an employee-owned marketplace located in the heart of New Haven, Conn., today announced that it will be holding several tasting events and celebrations throughout the month of April.  At these events, patrons are invited to enjoy foods and celebrate special days throughout the month while learning about the history and preparation of several dishes from around the world. In recognition of Earth Day, the market’s sale flyer for the week of April 19-April 25 will include only all-natural, non-GMO, and organic/local items.

“This month, we’re helping our customers celebrate special days with new grilled cheese recipes on National Grilled Cheese Day and great discounts on National Beer Day and Earth Day,” said Elm City Market event organizer Alexa Apotria. “Customers will also get to taste dishes from around the world at our Global Food Cruise and this month’s Cheese 101.”

• April 3 – On9 Art Music Design: On9 New Haven is a collaborative open-house evening in a neighborhood famous for innovative art, food, music and experiences. From 6 – 8 pm on the 3rd, Elm City Market will have a tasting event with uniquely shaped food displays to create a tasting experience that tempts all the senses, not just the palate. 
• April 7 – National Beer Day!: Elm City Market’s beer department offers an amazing selection of local and regional craft beer. Customers will have the chance to meet local vendors and learn about the brewing process from 5 – 7 pm. They will also receive 10% off of the market’s most popular, best-selling beer brands (no tastings at this event due to liquor license laws). 
• April 12 – National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day: From 11 am – 2 pm, customers are invited to join Elm City Market in sampling different kinds of grilled cheese sandwiches, from Nutella Brie to spicy crunchy nacho bites. Deli and cheese items will also be available for purchase at a discounted rate. 
• April 16 – Global Food Cruise Tasting Event: Elm City Market will host a storewide tasting event from 5:30 – 7:30 pm for patrons to explore a mix of décor, food and fun. Customers will enjoy exotic cultural samples from Spain, Italy, India and more. 
• April 16 – Soul de Cuba @ ECM: Soul de Cuba returns to Elm City Market to stir up some culturally inspired dishes through the Cuban and African tradition of food and art. Patrons are invited to enjoy this cooking demonstration at 5:30 pm. 
• April 22 - Cheese 101: Cheese in Paris!: At 6:30 pm, Elm City Market invites customers to learn about and taste a variety of cheeses from Paris, France. 
• April 22 – Earth Day: From 4 – 6 pm, Elm City Market will offer samples of natural local products. Special guest Munk Pack Company will be in attendance to offer super foods that are a good source of fiber and make the perfect breakfast or snack.

Brew On 9 - Ninth Square New Haven First Friday Events 2014

On Friday, May 2nd we attended the May First Friday Event sponsored by New Haven's Ninth Square, Brew on 9 (#BrewOn9) that featured a showcase of craft beer samples at many of the 9th Square establishments.

This was the first First Friday event that I was able to attend in 2014, having missed March's #ArtOn9 featuring local artists and art galleries in the Ninth Square, and April's #DesignOn9 which featured Connecticut designer, Neville Wisdon's Spring Fashion Show.

If you're not familiar with New Haven's 9th Square District and their First Friday events, on the First Friday of each month from March through December, the Ninth Square in New Haven holds "open to the public" events featuring merchants in the historic Ninth Square district with a theme that draws them all together.

A list of the upcoming events for 2014 appears at the end of this post.



Friday's Brew On 9 featured mostly CT and New England local breweries served at participating merchants. The event was a hopping [pun intended] success which had as much to do with Mother Nature as it did with the merchants we visited and the brew vendors who contributed! It was probably the first warm night of the spring season in Connecticut. YAY!  Temperatures were in the 60's making for comfortable weather for walking around the eclectic city streets in the 9th Square District and visiting the participating establishments.

The event planners did a great job of making this event user friendly!

First of all, if you're traveling from out of town and don't want to drive, the Ninth Square is a few city blocks from New Haven's Union Train Station. If you're driving and you're not lucky enough to score on street parking (metered) there's also a paid parking lot on the corner of Orange and George Steets ($8.00). I only wish they would ALSO partner up with On9 to offer reduced parking prices on the night of First Friday Events. (hint-hint)

Second of all, the events are affordable! While many of the events are free, some do require purchased tickets, and so far, none have been more than $20.00 per person.

Third of all, the event includes a map to the participating merchants and inside a little history on each of the craft beers that are offered.

Although we didn't stop in all 17 of the establishments that were participating we did hit quite a few! Here are some pictures highlighting the places we visited and the brews we sampled...

We started at O'Toole's Irish Pub where we sampled some Road 2 Ruin Double IPA by Two Roads Brewing. The beer was really good, but O'Toole's was REALLY busy with their usual Happy Hour so many had a wee bit of a wait.

Next up was the unique English Market Building - one of my favorite stores in the Ninth Square! They feature antiques and retro collectibles and on this visit I spotted a Polaroid Land Camera! Even the cowboy loved this store and the Penny Weiz Ale we sampled by Hartford Olde Burnside Brewing Company. The peeps at English Market are fun with an amazing eye for good finds. and the cowboy is still mad at me because in spite of all the beautiful girls that work there...I asked him to pose with a mannequin!  Honey, just get over it!

Next we stopped at Elm City Market who were featuring a wide array of craft beers. Highlight of the trip was meeting a local photographer who jumped right in and helped me with posing some of the beer pours! One of the great things about attending these events is the incredibly helpful and friendly people you get to meet!

Next we ambled over to the Grove to sample some of my hometown of Branford's own Thimble Island Brewery's Coffee Stout. This was my first time to the Grove and I was so impressed with the space. For those not familiar with the concept it's a shared co-op business space, artist studio, intelmedia hub, and more!  And I absolutely loved the hearty Coffee Stout!

We also visited Neville Wisdom's Design Studio aka NW Boutique who featured Back East Brewing's Porter, a dark beer that I loved because of its chocolate and caramel notes. It was also great to see both Neville and his assistant Lauren in the design studio and hear about their last two fashion events. I finally got to see Neville's Spring 2014 line in person and of course I loved what I saw! Beautiful pastel colors in classic shapes with a modern twist. Now I can't wait to go back and SHOP!!!  What's more ... I was THRILLED to see that Neville is featuring my interview of him on his inspiration wall, right alongside articles by the New Haven Register, Yale News, and other prominent publications that he is featured in! (see red arrow in picture below). Did I mention I was thrilled!??!! (Thank you Neville and Lauren!)

Neville Wisdom - Fall 2013 Fashion Show - New Haven CT

The 9th Square in New Haven CT is abuzz with activity. 

Great food, art, music, design, fashion and lifestyle events are all happening in this historic district. To highlight the eclectic array of merchants in the area, the 9th Square, or #On9 holds monthly #FirstFriday of the month events.

September's First Friday Event was billed as #BreatheOn9 and was set to feature healthy living via outdoor dining by restaurants Bentara and Palmeria, free Zumba and Yoga to kickoff  FITWEEK®, local fashions, a visit by the chic minibus Vinthrapologie, and MORE! 

But the highlight of this First Friday's event for me was the amazing fall fashions shown by Neville Wisdom, owner and designer at NW - Neville's Fashion Design Studio.

The event was amazing! As a customer of Neville's I was able to secure reserved seating for four, but the event, and all #On9 events are ALL open to the public.. I also recommended that a friend, Hilary, of My Own Blog Review,  model in the show, and was so happy for her when she made the "cut" !! 

The event did not disappoint.

The entire block of Orange Street in front of Neville's studio was closed off, and the black asphalt 'runway' made for a great urban catwalk! Look for a future post interviewing the amazing Neville Wisdom, but for now, you'll have to settle for a photo-recap of the looks from the show
