Social Media Promotion: Sponsored

On Weekends We Brunch - At COTTO Wine Bar

A few weekends back we found ourselves heading up to Stamford CT on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning for an invite to COTTO Wine Bar on Bank Street in Stamford CT. This amazing place is quickly becoming a local favorite for more than lunch and dinner! Their Sunday Brunch is fantastic too!

COTTO Wine Bar
51 Bank Street,  Stamford CT

Owners Claudio and Silvy Ridolfi opened Stamford's COTTO Wine Bar in 2012 with the simple idea of offering an interesting wine list full of regional Italian varieties, and a rustic trattoria menu including pizza, house made mozzarella and pasta, and a large selection of antipasti.

COTTO Wine Bar remains dedicated to providing customers with a meaningful dining experience, and added even more talent to this intimate restaurant and wine bar, with accredited sommelier, Ian Toogood, our host for the day. who came to COTTO via Marc Restaurant Group’s A Voce in Manhattan and Le Fat Poodle in Greenwich, CT, revamping COTTO’s wine list and further elevating its service.

COTTO is reminiscent of a charming little café in a sleepy Italian village. Designed as a tapas style wine bar with communal dining tables, the focal point of the urban eatery is the exposed brick wall adorned with vintage photos and magazine covers of Silvy’s absolutely beautiful mother, Simonetta Simeoni, a prominent Italian actress and model throughout the 1960s-70s.

Complete with the requisite red and white checked tablecloths on the outside patio tables, you will feel like you have been whisked away to the streets of Italy when you dine at COTTO!

Viceroy Publik House comes to Downtown Stamford CT

A new restaurant fusing the best of British and Indian heritage and tradition is coming to Stamford CT. That's right, The Vicery Publik House, soon to be THE cultural connection in downtown Stamford is set to open in April 2017!

Viceroy Publik House in Stamford CT

Taking a page from history, from what is now referred to as the “British Raj”, the British rule over the Indian subcontinent between 1858 and 1947, Viceroy Publik House pays homage to this now proud British and Indian cultural connect, offering a high energy English pub setting featuring London curry, pakoras and pints, and an edgy live music venue which is just as diverse as its menu. Located in Downtown Stamford, CT, Viceroy Publik House brings together these two cultures, rich in history and with a strong food and drink identity found in pubs throughout London.

A Publik House, “Pub” for short, was artfully designed by the British, dating as far back as the 1300s. Its focus was that of a gathering place where beer and cider were merely offerings within the pub’s social or political confines.  Over the years the concept grew and other cultures (Irish, Canadian, Australian, etc) brought their own food, drink, and entertainment to these neighborhood haunts, often a product of a town or family’s legacy.  Viceroy Publik House embraces its British namesake as the public face of the British presence in India, which ultimately carried with it strong Indian influences found throughout the British culture, namely its artistic and culinary presence.

 Located in a bi-level townhouse at 211 Summer Street, music promoter and innovative Stamford restaurateur Eric Monte has created an elevated pub experience lifted from the streets of London. Shepherd’s pie, fish & chips, Faroe Island salmon, and bangers ‘n mash share space with spicy vindaloo, madras, and samosas, favored pub fare to be accompanied by a pint.

 “The wheel has already been invented, “explains Monte, “Our goal was to simply create a style of restaurant and bar that spoke to the core values of a traditional English pub – historic influences and all.”

Owned by entrepreneur Ramya Lakshman, Viceroy Publik House enriches the dining scene along downtown Stamford’s “Little Summer Street”. Its entranceway is marked by the car hood of a vintage Triumph Bonnet, and suspended within the first floor’s picture window is a ‘68 Triumph Bonneville motorcycle, a product of the UK ethos. The street level dining room and bar is framed in carved mahogany wood and regal chandeliers, offering guests a menu filled with classic English pub fare, Indian curries, and libations presented in an intimate setting.

 The Tiger Room, Viceroy’s second story alter ego and music lounge is home to Monte’s signature musicians’ den. Featured on The Tiger Room’s Heineken Stage is an on-going spirited jam session among underground musicians, pop culture artists, and rock ‘n roll royalty with national acclaim. Monte, a consummate host with either a menu or a microphone in hand, has assembled a house band which will be the backbone to a robust schedule of music genres, as well as the area’s first live music karaoke night.

NOIR Stamford - Globally Inspired Cuisine on Summer Street

Globally Inspired Cuisine - Casual & Intimate Setting - NOIR Stamford

Here's a new word for me!  “Bistronomie”

And it's being introduced to Fairfield county by way of NOIR Stamford!

Inspired by the Europeans, and now making its way stateside, Bistronomie is a progressive form of dining derived from the mashing together of ‘bistro’ and ‘gastronomy’.  Call it five-star cuisine sans the white tablecloths and pretense of a stereotypical high end restaurant. It’s a new day, and chefs, as well as consumers, know what they want to eat and how best to enjoy their dining experience.

NOIR Stamford, spearheaded by veteran art dealer Carrin Schechter, introduced this innovative dining style to Stamford this past November, adding to the city’s robust culinary landscape.

The menu takes its cues from across the globe, with an undeniable and delicious nod to French cuisine. Chef Francisco Ciciliano, formerly of Baldanza Natural Market & Café and Bistro Bonne Nuit in New Canaan, infuses vibrancy and warmth, taking familiar dishes and making them new again.

Seasonal menu highlights include;

  • Escargot prepared with garlic, parsley butter and toasted bread crumbs;
  • Tuna Tartare with caper lime dressing;
  • Slow Braised Short Rib served with house made sauerkraut, kale, lemon confit, and herb relish;
  • Real French Onion Soup Gratinee with crostini and melted Gruyere;
  • Avocado Salad with charred baby kale, mache, Manchego cheese, and orange vinaigrette;
  • Crispy Duck Breast with sweet potato puree and Grand Marnier sauce;
  • Stonington Sea Scallops with chive mashed potato and haricot verts;
  • Braised Lamb Shank with crispy onions, pickled vegetables and duchesse potato;
  • Steak Frites Au Poivre served with hand cut French fries and béarnaise Brussels sprouts; \
  • Pappardelle with pesto cream sauce, garlic shrimp, and marinated tomatoes.

Enhancing the culinary experience is a relaxed, while attentive service style and NOIR’s charming dining room setting. Framed in exposed brick walls, bistro chalkboard menus, eclectic FOSartwork, black chandeliers with dangling crystals, large mirrors and hip music, this stylish eatery can seat up to 40 people.

The beverage offerings feature top shelf cocktails such as:

  • The Belvedere martini with blue cheese stuffed olives,
  • The NOIR, shaken with Knob Creek and absinth bitters.
  • The Jazzy Latina made with jalapeño infused tequila, strawberry puree, lime and Cointreau.

  • A stellar wine list complements the cross cultural menu.

Located at 225 Summer Street, a.k.a. “Little Summer Street”, among a melting pot of restaurants and gathering places, NOIR is open for dinner Tuesday thru Saturday and will be offering a Sunday Artist Brunch showcasing the talents of regional artists over spicy bloody Marys and Chef’s Sunday Hash starting in 2016.

Chef Alex Rosado joins Paloma Restaurant in Stamford CT

Chef Alex Rosado Brings

His Bold and Beautiful Latin Flavors to
Harbor Point’s Paloma Restaurant

When describing the flavors in his dishes, Chef Alex Rosado uses words like “love” and “goodness”. He kisses his fingers as if to exclaim “Bellissimo!” Paloma is thrilled to add such passion to the dynamic team that head up Stamford’s popular tequila infused, bold and flavorful, wood-fired, indoor-outdoor, bi-level and multi-sensory restaurant, bar and event venue overlooking Stamford Harbor and an  industrial city at work.

Chef Rosado hails from Puerto Rico and brings with him an impressive culinary lineage. Alex graduated from Atlanta’s School of Culinary Arts in 1996. He began honing his skills, cooking in some of the city’s most highly-regarded restaurants, including Bill Swearingen and Philippe Haddad's The Abbey and Philippe’s Bistro. This up and coming chef would then go on to cook at such prestigious hotels as the Ritz Carlton in San Juan, Puerto Rico as the Chef de Cuisine for The Caribbean Grill, and then on to The Biltmore Hotel in Miami, Florida where he was fortunate enough to have worked closely under Executive Chef de Cuisine Philippe Ruiz. It was ultimately his position as the Executive Chef of Little Palm Island  in Little Torch Key, Florida from 2009-2012 that would thrust this young chef’s career into high gear, and where he amassed numerous accolades and awards, including a “Best Chefs of America” honor bestowed to him by his fellow chefs.

In 2013 Chef Rosado traveled up the coast to Westport, CT, where he managed the opening of one of Fairfield County’s most ambitious building renovations; Westport’s historical post office building, built circa 1935, and transformed the space into a striking New American restaurant and gathering place, Post 154. Paloma is excited to have Chef Alex Rosado at the helm of its kitchen where this talented and fearless chef can share his passion for Latin cuisine.

Guests can look forward to a new menu (January 2016) that will embrace the flavors and culinary traditions of Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain, and even Venezuela. In addition to Paloma’s signature botanas, perfect for sharing with the entire table, menu highlights will include slow braised and fire grilled meats and market fresh fish. A sneak peek into Chef Rosado’s new menu includes:

  • King Crab Ceviche with aji amarillo, red onion, cilantro, and evoo;
  • Shrimp & Corn Taquitos with roasted tomato salsa, avocado relish, and cotija cheese;
  • Steak & Cheese Empanadas punctuated with smoked aioli;
  • Chipotle BBQ Ribs served with black beans and mango pico de gallo;
  • Mahi Mahi "a la plancha" with smoked passion fruit butter, baked "boulangere" style malanga, and serrano chiles;
  • Braised Lamb Shank Mole with root vegetable puree and warm Brussels sprout salad;
  • Wood Grilled Chateaubriand for two prepared with aji panca rub, butternut squash creamed potatoes, and Paloma steak sauce;
  • Lobster Mofongo of whole Maine lobster, New England bacon, and "criollo" lobster broth.

Private events at Paloma continue to shine, now with added menu options such as a variety of whole roasted meats, including suckling pig, lamb, and steamship round of beef.

Sharing the stage and complementing Chef Rosado’s lively flavor profiles is an equally inspired beverage platform led by Olie Berlic, an award-winning sommelier, cocktail aficionado and bartender, who has been a professional in the fine wine and spirits industry for over 25 years. He is the creator of Beleza Pura Cachaça and Caipirinha, and the first importer in the U.S. to create a portfolio of handcrafted cachaças. Cocktails we’re all abuzz about include; The Paloma –camarena reposado tequila, grapefruit crème brulée nectar, grapefruit, lime, sea salt, and carbonated purified water; Bees & Honey – el buho mezcal, maker's mark bourbon, raw honey, lemon, and ginger-turmeric nectar; Red Sangria – malbec, cab, apples, oranges, rosewater, and house concoctions; and a happy hour favorite, the Paloma Cosmo - lemon vodka, orange jasmine vodka, lime, cranberry, and agave nectar.

2016 is going to be a fabulous year for Paloma. Join them for lunch, dinner, happy hour, Sunday brunch, late night music and cocktails, and be sure to check out their Private Event offerings, featuring stunning rooms with a waterfront view to intimate dinners by the fireplace – Chef Rosado and the Paloma team will craft your perfect event.

The Fez in Stamford to Reopen in mid-August

The Fez is Getting a Whole Lot Fezzier
Stamford’s Spice Route Restaurant and Live Music Locale
Prepares to Re-open in Just a Few Weeks!

It was 2010 when The Fez introduced its Moroccan inspired menu, eclectic wine offerings,  underground vibe and a steady stream of diverse musicians to Stamford’s thriving downtown neighborhood. This past June, amid the completion of much of the The Fez’s Summer Street neighbors apartment house construction, The Fez began a summer-long renovation process to enhance The Fez experience that patrons have grown to love.

“The original inception of The Fez laid down the foundation, “says Eric Monte, creator and operator of The Fez, “Now it’s time to take things to the next level. We are not reinventing the wheel here – we are just making things a whole lot Fezzier.”

A refreshed brand was first on the agenda, which encompasses The Fez’s signature fez hat and scimitar sword, and will now introduce the iconic fez hat clad monkey, a traditional companion to the Turkish accordion players. Patrons will also be able to navigate through a brand new web site, complete with menus, event information and an in-depth live music calendar.

The Fez’s interior transformation includes a stunning dining room, bar, and performance space, framed in vibrant red walls, eclectic artwork, and posh drapery. The bar capacity has nearly doubled in size and an added bar section has been created stage side where music enthusiasts can pull up a front row seat while enjoying drinks and dinner. The stage area is enhanced with contemporary lighting and the entire space is wrapped in a state of the art sound system.

The Fez’s unconventional approach to its organically grown music scene is a product of Eric’s music biz background. The dexterity of the talent line-up will not only continue to entertain and surprise people, the music program is now under the direction of a house band, The Casablanca Project, led by accomplished musician Bobby Fiorito. For bookings, bands may contact Bobby directly: Booking@FEZEG.com

Patrons can look forward to more of The Fez’s vibrant Moroccan / Mediterranean cuisine which takes it cues from The Spice Route, the name given to the network of sea routes where fragrant spices were traded from the west coast of Japan, through the islands of Indonesia, India, the Middle East, and across the Mediterranean to Europe. The menu features a large selection of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes, in addition to customer favorites and some new items that Chef Shelby is extremely excited to prepare. Bold and flavorful dishes include; Baba Ganoush, a classic Turkish roasted eggplant puree served with Fez pita chips; Spanakopita “Raviolis” filled with spinach and feta cheese, wrapped in filo dough with toasted pine nuts and kalamata olives;  Shrimp Falafel, house made falafel stuffed with shrimp and served with a trio of dipping sauces: artichoke sauce, fennel dip and harissa mayo; Grilled Octopus with harissa mango sauce and fried fava beans; Vegan Pizzet topped with arugula and dried apricots and drizzled with Moroccan Aragon oil; Chicken Aroub over sumac braised onions and walnuts and topped with toasted pine nuts; Filet of Tenderloin (two 4 ounce filets) served napoleon style with potato cake and an olive truffle drizzle; and Charmoula Wild Salmon cooked in an aromatic Moroccan spiced rub and seasoned sauce, served with saffron couscous, cracked green olives and fennel salad.

“The wine list will evolve constantly and we have crafted an extended beverage program which will highlight our popular seasonal spirit infusions and lend itself to even more food pairings,” promises Eric.

Join The Fez for its grand re-opening and unveiling on August 15 and celebrate Eric’s, “Papa Fez” Birthday! Opening night will feature the Casablanca Project and The Juicy Grapes, along with special guest appearances from Bobby and Eric’s talented musician friends.

Paloma Grill in Stamford CT

Social Media Sampling

Last week we received an invite to head up to Stamford CT to sample some of the Latin-infused menu at Paloma Grill. The restaurant is located on the water in the Harbor Point area, an up and coming section that boasts several restaurants, clubs, and eateries.

In addition, the restaurant is owned by Chef Aarón Sánchez, of Food Network fame.

Paloma Grill in Harbor Point - Stamford CT

The menu features a wide array of offerings, from whole roasted cuts of meats, to an extensive raw bar, ceviche, grilled seafood, and a slew of of shareable plates.

Of course, we started with some of Paloma's classic and contemporary cocktails made from a wide selection of handcrafted spirits, including tequila, mezcal, pisco, cachaca, and rum.

Cocktails at Paloma Grill in Stamford

Paloma Margarita
Lime and Orange house tincture, hibiscus nectar, gran mariner, silver tequila

After sipping on cocktails we began sampling some of the great appetizers and shared plates available at Paloma Grill!

Here's a photo tour featuring some of our offerings of the night....

Seafood Tostadas
Crab Salad
and Glazed Shrimp - both delicious!

 Snapper crudo (top left) and lobster ceviche (top right)
Bottom: queso fundito skillet with mushrooms

Albondigas, meatballs with chipotle broth,
brightened flavor with mint, and cojita cheese

Mexican street corn
with chipotle crema and cojita cheese

Garganelli pasta with chorizo

The pasta dish was the only 'miss' of the night for me as it was a bit too heavy in seasoning for my flavor preferences.

Then we moved on to our entrees! Favorites were the amazing Short Ribs and the moist and flavorful Cuban Chicken.

Camarones Mojo de Ajo

Short Ribs of Beef with ancho cacao rub and vegetables

Cuban Chicken with a side of tamarin fried rice

Dessert was a double win with the light churros and the creamy deliciously rich salted caramel cheesecake parfait.

Churros with dulce de leche rolled in cinnamon sugar

Salted Caramel Cheesecake Parfait

We loved Paloma and Chef Sanchez has a winner with this location directly on the waterfront at Harbor Point with amazing views. The restaurant features both indoor and outdoor seating, along with a private dining room and bar dining options for larger parties.

A salute to Chef Nanyo - Thank you for a delicious dinner!
